Little noticed bad news

As the world financial system melts down and we all panic over our personal and national futures, there is a risk you may miss some of the disasters going on.  Fear not, we at the cockpit are keeping an eye out to make sure you get all the doom and gloom of the current situation.

So apparently Russia is going to bailout Iceland, why? Because the Fed, the EU and their Scandinavian friends all said no.  What do they want in return? Use of the Keflavik airbase

During the Cold War Soviet Backfire bombers would be intercepted by USAF aircraft flying out of Keflavik, before they reached the vital North Atlantic trade routes.

Why is this so shocking and bad? Keflavik served as the “high ground” of the North Atlatnic during the Cold War.  From this base the American SOSUSsystems and other patrols kept track on the comings and goings of the Soviet fleet and provided a convenient place to concentrate our air and sea power against a Soviet surge of sea or air power into the vital trade routes between Europe and North America.

While so far the word is a Russian base is “out of the question”, given how we’ve watched the world melt down and the unthinkable become routine.  This is cold comfort.

  1. You mean you don’t trust the Gray Eminence of Vladimir Putin to keep the North Atlantic safe?

  2. I trust him to keep it safe for Russia, which is a dagger pointed at Europe and the US’s heart.
